| Consider the tortured racial history of the War on Drugs. Blacks were twice as likely as whites to be arrested for a drug offense in 1975 but four times as likely by 1989. Throughout the 1990s, drug-arrest rates remained at historically unprecedented levels. Yet according to the National Survey on Drug Abuse, drug use among adults fell from 20 percent in 1979 to 11 percent in 2000. A similar trend occurred among adolescents. In the age groups 12–17 and 18–25, use of marijuana, cocaine, and heroin all peaked in the late 1970s and began a steady decline thereafter. Thus, a decline in drug use across the board had begun a decade before the draconian anti-drug efforts of the 1990s were initiated. |

Why are so many Americans in prison?
Because the government runs the people not the people running the government.
We are stupid. We elect others to protect us but at the same time their worth is measured on how many convictions they win. We have Mike Nifongs running around trying to impress their voters. It really sucks as I was REAL close to being one of the imprisoned for 17 years for something I never did.
Our criminal justice system sucks ass. _________________ Medical Marijuana Patient |

And therein lies the problem brother. We as a people need to protect our selves. Especially from those who would tell us we need them to protect us.

The people have decided that they don't want the burden of being involved in the world. They want their "leaders" to do it for them so that they can focus on the important things like making more money and buying more stuff and making sure they are better than someone else so that they can feel ok about themselves.
Prision to me is like the expressional suppression each individual is required to have in order to be part of the American society is willfully imposed on those who don't practice it so that those that do can validate their own ideology. After millenia of torture, abuse, and brainwashing we have found our selves here in time and place. I hope that we are on the brink of a species wide nervous break down. It would be great catharsis for our group consciousness. _________________ Blessings and Love ~

The ancient Egyptians discovered thousands of years ago that education prevents the need for prisons (well, not completely).
Every study on the subject matter has shown that education dramatically reduces the chances that a person will commit crimes.
And education costs far less than prisons do. _________________ http://www.prntrkmt.org/ |

Education is a great way to avoid imprisoning people. Ridding ourselves of selfishness and ego will also go a long way to eliminating prisons.
The number one thing that could abolish prisons would be to abolish money and change our whole way of "working" as a society. If we were smart we would all have anything we want, work whatever job or field we are best at, and have a much more peaceful existence. Money has to go. Systems of any sort where he who holds the most chips controls the game isn't going to cut it. No one person or group of people should be able to gain and hold the majority of power and decision making over the rest.
I'm thinking too far ahead of the game though. It would take a massive shift in conscious and require a whole different outlook on our state of being.......
If knowledge is power, we must give away as much TRUTHFUL knowledge as possible to ANYONE and EVERYONE that we can. We must dilute the power of the few into the hands of everyone. _________________ -Brother Adam (we are all one family)

Police officers acquitted for beating a 64 yr old man recently in New Orleans. In the words of their defense attorney "all he had to do was comply"....and they wouldn't have fractured his face. |

I think it's time for folks to realize that the PUNISHMENT PARADIGM does not work...nor has it EVER.
This is another hang-over symptom from a belief in an Angry, Punishing God, which needs to be laid to rest.
Some folks -- a small percentage of the whole -- are a violent danger and need to be sequestered away. A very small percentage.
Legitimately, an offender can only be someone who has caused harm -- and justice is served when that harm is compensated. If I'm harmed, where's MY compensation if someone simply gets locked away. There's no healthy satisfaction in that.
Bliss on,
