>From February of 2003, to 100 days later, June 2003, Thai police executed over 4,000
Thais, jailing 60,000, in a bid to meet targets set by the Thai Prime Minister to
'complertely end all illegal drug use by whatever means necessary'.

This is from the Bangkok Post (english language newspaper)

Thailand: US Official Declares War On Drugs A Success
(27 Nov 2003) Bangkok Post Thailand

A senior US drug official yesterday hailed Thailand's war against drugs as a success.

William J. Snipes, the regional director of the US Drug Enforcement Administration,
said the war on drugs has been effective.

``Whether that's a lasting effect, we'll have to wait and see. Temporarily, we look at
it as successful,'' he said.

Thailand had the will to eradicate drugs, but as evidenced in the United States it was
a problem that might never disappear altogether.

He was speaking at the Bang Pa-In industrial estate where seized drugs worth about 2.9
billion baht were incinerated, including 19 million methamphetamine pills, marijuana,
heroin, ketamine liquid and ecstasy pills.

The government began a violent crackdown on drugs in February and plans to announce the
country drug free ahead of the King's birthday on Dec 5.

THAILAND'S DRUG WAR . . . "A SUCCESS"? "ERADICATION"??
.. MORE LIKE EXECUTIONS AND MURDER!

The Government in Thailand has declared its three-month campaign to stop the sale and
use of illegal drugs "a success". The Prime Minister claims that, as a result of the
crackdown which he initiated, 90% of the problem has been eradicated and all drugs will
be eradicated by the end of the year. People who deal or use drugs will, in the Prime
Minister's words, " be put behind bars or may even vanish without a trace - who cares?
They are destroying our country."

THE TRUE RESULT OF THAILAND'S "WAR ON DRUGS"

Close to 3000 PEOPLE HAVE DIED through police operating a "shoot to kill' policy
against suspected dealers The high death toll has provoked international concern A
further 50,000 people have been arrested

DEPLORABLE HEALTH CONDITIONS / HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS

HIV & hepatitis epidemics out of control
Public health response negligible
Lack of information on prevention and safety
Denial of care and treatment to people who use drugs
Very few needle exchanges
Scant, poor, low-dose methadone programmes
The methods used by the police, with the government support are unique:
"Dealers will be given the chance to be 'converted' and addicts weaned off their
habits."
DRUG USERS ARE TREATED LIKE CRIMINALS, NOT HUMAN BEINGS

There is international condemnation of this war on drug users, of the deaths and of the
removal of liberty of 60,000 largely disenfranchised Thais. This is a gross abuse of
human rights

The THAI USERS NETWORK (thread)
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/AMSL3Discuss/message/2237

A group of active and former drug users in Thailand has organized in response to the
deplorable health and human rights situation, in particular the current climate of fear
caused by the killings. They have called for an INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ACTION on
Thursday, June 12, 2003 to bring world-wide pressure on the Thai Government to put an
end to this horror and to provide adequate healthcare for people who use drugs.. A list
of their demands is posted on the web site of the

(from September/October 1996 Marijuana Policy Report)
Picture this: An indiscreet American college student returning from a vacation in
Mexico is caught with two ounces of marijuana in his pocket. A judge is forced to
sentence him to spend the rest of his life in federal prison. If this is his second
offense, he will be executed. Could this really happen in America? Yes, if U.S. Rep.
