The government's relaxation of the law on cannabis use was attacked by the United Nations last night. Koli Kouame, secretary of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), the UN agency dedicated to monitoring legal regimes of member states, said the downgrading of cannabis from Class B to C could send the wrong signal and damage the global fight against drug abuse.

What the WHO doesn't want you to know about cannabis
The report concludes, for example, that "in developed societies cannabis appears to play little role in injuries caused by violence, as does alcohol". It also says that while the evidence for fetal alcohol syndrome is "good", the evidence that cannabis can harm fetal development is "far from conclusive".

Cannabis also fared better in five out of seven comparisons of long-term damage to health. For example, the report says that while heavy consumption of either drug can lead to dependence, only alcohol produces a "well defined withdrawal syndrome". And while heavy drinking leads to cirrhosis, severe brain injury and a much increased risk of accidents and suicide, the report concludes that there is only "suggestive evidence that chronic cannabis use may produce subtle defects in cognitive functioning".

Two comparisons were more equivocal. The report says that both heavy drinking and marijuana smoking can produce symptoms of psychosis in susceptible people. And, it says, there is evidence that chronic cannabis smoking "may be a contributory cause of cancers of the aerodigestive tract".

The U.S. federal government has failed to make public its own 1994 study that undercuts its position that marijuana is carcinogenic - a $2 million study by the National Toxicology Program. The program's deputy director, John Bucher, says the study "found absolutely no evidence of cancer." In fact, animals that received THC had fewer cancers. Bucher denies his agency had been pressured to shelve the report, saying the delay in making it public was due to a personnel shortage.

In reaction to medical cannabis access referendums on the ballots in Arizona and California, former presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George Bush signed a letter stating that they ``categorically oppose'' access to cannabis for its many proven therapeutic uses such as the prevention of blindness and epileptic seizures.

Their chief concern was that legal medical access would send the message that cannabis is safe. The presidents can, however, lay their safety concerns to rest because the scientific literature overwhelmingly confirms that cannabis is both an effective and safe medicine.

Even more, in 1975 researchers at the Medical College of Virginia found that cannabis showed powerful antitumor activity against both benign and malignant tumors (the government then banned all future cannabis/cancer research) [4]. Powerful evidence that cannabis not only does not cause cancer, but that it may prevent and even cure cancer.

What this shows us most clearly, in light of the consensus to the contrary, is the enormous power of a Big Lie.

United Nations Drug Report “Disappointing” XTC v Meth!
Yesterday (September 23, 2003) the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime released its report Ecstasy and Amphetamines - Global Survey 2003. The report estimates that worldwide 7.7 million people used the drug ecstasy from 2000-2001.

This figure is approximately one-half the number of people who used cocaine during that time period, and approximately one-fourth fewer people than used heroin during that same time period.

According to the report, ecstasy users risk “suffering the effects of early decline in mental function and memory, or Alzheimer-type symptoms.”

The report was released just weeks after scientists at Johns Hopkins University retracted their research findings that suggested that a single evening's use of ecstasy could cause permanent brain damage and Parkinson's disease. The scientists admitted that they utilized the wrong drug in their studies.

The UN report makes no mention of the retracted studies.

According to Richard Glen Boire, legal counsel for the Center for Cognitive Liberty and Ethics, a US-based law and policy group focused on protecting of freedom of thought, the UN report is also disappointing for its adoption of US government rhetoric.

Well, you may or have not heard by now but the Rave Act has hit very close to home. On the 30th of May the Billings chapter of Montana NORML/SSDP had organized a highly publicized and expensive benefit concert featuring a number of local acts, the proceeds from which would have gone to help the medical marijuana campaign in Montana in 2004. Unfortunately, not only did my probation officer arrest me the day before, but the DEA came and shut things down the day of. Johns Hopkins scientists find new error involving vial mislabeled in the first experiment. Scientists at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine have retracted a second study linking the drug Ecstasy to a certain type of brain damage because once again the wrong drug was given to lab animals. Dr. Una D. McCann, a neuroscientist involved in both experiments, said a letter of retraction was sent Thursday to a medical journal, which she declined to identify until editors there decide how to handle the matter.

Scientists discovered the mistake after they checked lab records to see if methamphetamine from a mislabeled vial used in the first experiment had been used elsewhere. "As you might imagine, we systematically went through the books to find out which, if any, of our published studies involved the same [vial]," she said Thursday. hi echo , sadly i think you are right . there is a lot of 'back-peddling' going on right accross the full spectrum of our british media.even people who openly advocated more sensible attitudes towards cannabis are now turning against us.we are definetly going a few steps bachward.

as for the U.N. you are absolutely right about them also.i cannot believe they are taking such an out of date stand on this issue.even their own research proves that they are talking rubbish!

oh well , the battle goes on , and more and more people are discovering how rediculous the prohibition against cannabis is.i guess it is hard for govt. and U.N. people to admit that all the damage their policies have done is completely unjustifiable.it would make them all look stupid.
