Cannabis downgrade status could be reversed
THE panel advising the Government on drugs meets today to discuss whether the downgrading of cannabis should be reversed.
Home Secretary Charles Clarke asked the independent advisers to reassess the dangers in March, highlighting recent studies associating its use with "psychotic symptoms".
He asked for particular guidance on Dutch plans to introduce a higher classification for more potent types of dope, known as skunk.
Ex-home secretary David Blunkett downgraded the drug from Class B to Class C - placing it alongside steroids - in January last year.
This made most cannabis possession cases a non-arrestable offence.
Yesterday, the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs heard evidence from cannabis users and charities.
Members begin deliberations today and are expected to report to ministers by the end of the year.

Hey, alright!! I'm a minister of cannabis sacrament, and as such I expect to hear their report in a timely manner. After all, I'm an authority on the subject matter. _________________ -Brother Adam (we are all one family)

Shame!
Mr. Blunkett's deliberation was a step forward for our society here in the UK and generally for Europe. It was a legislation that more than in one way resembled the Dutch one. But you see what happens when you take a popular decision that does not comply with the BIG GUYS' agenda? Look at what happened to Mr. Blunkett ever since. His career is over, he is being ridiculed and put aside like an idiot. And it's a shame because the guy believed in what he was doing, unlike many more successful politicians. Isn't this a warning for all? _________________

Experts say cannabis should stay class C despite mental health fears
By Sophie Goodchild, Home Affairs Correspondent
Published: 25 September 2005
Drug experts will advise ministers that there should be no reversal of the downgrading of cannabis from a class B to a class C drug following claims that it is linked with mental illness.
Members of the Advisory Council on Drugs (ACMD) are understood to have ruled out a change after hearing evidence from cannabis users as well as police and drugs charities.
The ACMD met yesterday and on Friday in response to a request from Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary, to reassess the dangers of the drug. This followed the recent publication of studies which associated cannabis with "psychotic" symptoms.
The drug advisers were also asked to provide guidance on a higher classification for skunk - a more potent form of cannabis - but it is understood that members of the ACMD think this would be unworkable.
Most cases of cannabis possession are now non-arrestable offences, but research published next year is likely to show some police forces are continuing to take a hard line against users.
A source close to the ACMD said: "The feeling is that the committee has given thorough consideration to all the research on the health risks of cannabis and that reclassification is not necessary."
However, this does not rule out a rethink. Mr Clarke has indicated he still may reverse the decision of David Blunkett, the previous Home Secretary, to make cannabis a class C drug even if the ACMD advises him against this.
