Communities should have alternatives to using the DARE program, becuause of it's ineffectiveness. There are other programs out there infinitely more effective, but DARE has a stranglehold on drug education. DARE has, you stated contributed to increased drug use, and should be replaced with a more effective program. I was greatly concerned by Kathleen Parker's column regarding President Bush's lack of honesty in discussing his "possible prior drug use" ("Bush tapes: With friends like these . . .," Feb. 23).

Part of acting like a grown-up means telling the truth when it is vital to do so.

Honest, open lines of communication are crucial in providing our children with the best means possible to avoid the dangers around them. Yet problems with drug abuse persist because well-intentioned parents like George W. Bush and Parker close down this necessary parenting tool in order to "protect their children."

What they are doing is creating a system of distrust for authority and a recognition of hypocrisy that damages further communication.

Being honest with kids about drugs. 7 Mar 2005

Hello. I am Dianna Davis and I had sent in a letter to this board asking for donations to help with my families crisis. I just want to put in my opinion concerning the discussion of being honest with kids about drugs. My husband and I were honest with our children about our use of marijuana for medical reasons. We sat down with the 3 oldest children and explained to them that we did use marijuana, but that we only did so for medicinal reasons; that the marijuana helps me to live a fully functional life outside of a wheelchair and that it keeps Eddie from having epileptic seizures which could potentially kill him or leave him permanently disabled as well as helping him to deal with the chronic pain that he lives with daily.

(We did not include our youngest son in this conversation because we felt that he was too young to understand.) We did not use the marijuana in front of our children, but felt that we needed to talk to them about it because they were asking questions. Now we are being ostracized because of our use of the marijuana. Our schools teach our children how bad all drugs are and that there is no medical use for any drug, including marijuana. Then add in the other parent putting only God knows what in their minds, and here we are!

I agree that parents should be honest with their children about drugs. But, I understand that it is very hard to be honest when you face something like this happening. We had thought that our children would understand and see our side, but we were evidently wrong. I still feel that we were right in being honest with our children and I hope that someday our government realizes how much harm is done by prohibition, not only in wasting taxpayers money locking up non-violent offenders but in destroying families with the lies that are told to back up the reasons for the prohibition.

The poisons eradicating the hemp, does more harm than smoking a bong, and removing hemp ditchweed doesn't do a whole hellava lot for the kids finding cheap white powders profiting the same chemical and lab equipment supplies.

Is prison sodomy really the Christian way to repentance? Religious drug treatment, preachers and cops still dealing with medical issues for the drug cartels listed on the Dow Jones. While Physicians are persecuted for doing their jobs. Blackmailed by AMA Protection Rackets and DEAth threats if they even mention, let alone say its ok. More Pharmaid salesmen and women in Doctors waiting rooms than patients. All their drugs come with built in side effects as an added Christmas bonus. If they don't work try something else. A long list before "natural" is even brought up.

And if it works, so what. Its just anecdotal. Reality has nothing to do with maintaining reefer mad dysfunctions. Only "drugs" can cure an ill, if it cures, its a drug. If its a drug it must be tested by the FDA, unless its a cannabis product, either hemp or Ganja. Then its by sole permission of the drug czar. And then its only with mediocre schwag grown on a US Military base. So the homegrown that works, is illegal. And since all these millions of folks were getting relief from an illegal drug, the only thing DEAth could do was build more prisons. Now that industry houses 2 million, sells them food paid with tax dollars and sells blankets and lawyers and the mahogany bench and marble courthouses built to keep up.

The petrol chemical based or maintained commodities presently forced on the citizens as alternatives to natural organic Sacramental Ganja meds and hemp food, fuel and fiber make billions a year perpetuating the poisoning. Kids play in the dirt sprayed from the sky with contaminants running off into the water the pregnant woman just drank. Aborting more unborn than these Operation Rescuers claim Planned Parenthood does. Neuro illness also running rampant since the inception of fossil fools and Ganja prohibition. Maybe a coincidence but then someone made the trillion spent arresting Ganja users. Intervention over Prevention, treatment and eradication. Confiscation, forfeitures, all provide incentives to maintain this war. Funding for programs to help keep kids out of trouble after school, taken away to justify poisoning song bird seed.

Hemp paper and lumber products will let the kids have woods to explore. Instead of a crack pipe out of boredom. Since bong stash cost more than Gold. Trees clear cut instead of making fresh air removing CO2 producing oxygen and filtering water. Given free, but DEAth can't see or doesn't care. Frothing zealots Souter and John Waldo's working hard to sell their Ganjawar paraphernalia products. Tax shelters for spare change to fund PDFA this is your egg on drugs commercials. 2 mil $$$ during the supperbowl, in between 30 second spots of those twins selling Miller, Ganja's cousin hops.

Veggie oil or soldier kids dying in the sand? Plastic goes to landfills now what's wrong with biodegradable? Car parts and clothing from Mid West farmers instead of raping Alaska for two years worth of lead and sulfur pollution crude we don't want anyway.

So DEAth mongers don't like clean air for kids for some reason, clean water bothers them and trees must be ugly and imperfect or something? Believing in Geeeeeezus plants from mamon, idolatry at its worst. The Jesus I've heard of, didn't build any churches or hold any titles or charge any fees. Instead of war to convert donations, he wiped the dust off his hemp rope sandals and left without argument. Take it or leave it. Nothing written in best sellers. Or forced on the kids. Nothing he ever mentioned about his mom being a Virgin. No special robes or did he wear a solid gold cross from his neck. Blessing the starving as he drives past them. How many meals would it buy? The Archiologists discovered the temple incense was made with hashish. Did he inhale?

Hempseed, the most nutritional food source can not be grown in the US cause the meat and grain industry and their chemical buds coersed Klintoon with contributions. How bad you want to win? Bush continues the farce taking large sums of cash from fossil fools poisons, appointing large sums of their x employees to not enforce what they can't gut with legislation. To dole out contracts in spite of past records, as long as they mandate pisstastes so the labs can collect more $millions.

Kids losing tuition assistance for life if they test positive. Won't stop the hardrugs that wash out in a day or so. Only the metabolites of cannabis are found, though they aren't harmful in the first place. Or do they indicate when a person used. Inebriation testing won't treat employees like prisoners. If inebriation was what they wanted eliminated. Three Martini lunches might get in the way. So these Madison Ave Ad Agency deals made with drugczars behind closed doors. The dealers drink all they choose, the drunkeness from the booze, disapates with a tiny snort of cocaine. How convenient. Then they think of something else to scare the kids or their parents.

Medicine is best left to patients and doctors and nurses and caregivers. Not vested interest profiteers stealing billions of tax dollars and hundreds of Constitutional infractions and child molestation of their delicate minds with flat out lies and teaching them to snitch on their parents, friends and neighbors. How low life is it when kids die for lazy DEAth liars. Or lose their house and parents cause they did the "right thing". The religious right maybe. How many patients would really give up drugs from the store for a weed that didn't work? How many times must some one smoke a joint without any incidents or mishaps before someone witnesses it? How many kids will die from cigarettes spiked with thousands of corporate chemicals behind this prohibition? Chemicals when ignited do damage organic tobacco doesn't. Or organic Ganja.

Yet they compare the hundreds of thousands dead from cigarettes, thousands from aspirin and illegal drugs, tens of thousands from booze and Pharmaceuticals and not a one overdosing from Ganja. Compare what? I think St Francis said to go out and find food for the hungry, medicine for the sick and dying, shelter and heat for the homeless, clothing for the naked, and a peaceful alternative to chemical booze products whipping up Nationalists to kill other parents kids for oil, with chemical defoliant agents and depleted uranium. But what would the message be to the kids?

Have you ever considered that the war on some drugs is actually a product. A commodity that raises the Economic value of the country. Every year $billions are spent "fighting" it, and we seem to forget each dollar spent by the government is also taxable earned income to many. Returning approx. 30% tax that would not be returned in peace. Doctors dispensing is surely safer than the streets. And at a price without the risk. removing the profits, violence and associated crime. Each new AIDs or HepC "patient/product" also helps keep us economically strong as a nation. Is it a wonder why condoms are condemned? Is it really a surprise needle exchanges are forbotten when both potentially prevent these profits? Each new case or arrest, trial, plea bargain, probation or incarceration creates wealth that would not be created without prohibition, 700,000 times a year on cannabis possessors alone. Each environmental disease created by chemicalization, clearcutting, deforestation and strip mining also creates jobs and taxes in treatment. When a Bush runs up a $5 trillion debt to banks collecting $200 billion a year in interest, while he and friends have vested interest in the banks, and it isn't news, Ya just gotta wonder.

The media is concerned once again with another politico's sexcapades and mainstream drama is churned out while reality affecting all of our lives methodically escapes the viewers. Other than Free Speech TV or Community Television's audience that is. The "coincidence" of fossil fuel and synthetic fiber being in competition with hemp. 270 million tons of chemicals used on cotton or using trees with less cellulose and requiring more chemicals, sold and taxed and also not included in herbal and organic farming. That should be questioned. While the fascist* gain seats in the Government Houses, individual and community representation loses to corporate media blitzes of white noise. While we the people make a living the only way we were taught, maintaining the addictions to limited, nonrenewable resources, selling and buying images that create illness to treat and maintain our gluttonous glory. 50 years the FDA refused to test Fluoridation while the aluminum and pesticide industries reaped fortunes converting a hazardous waste into a dentrafice, aided by very friendly Dentist to once again save the poor kids. At the expense of seniors brittle bones and numerous Neurological ailments linked, yet avoided in law, broadcast or editorials. Simoultaniously while $billion concerns over dying patients using marijuana make the headlines. To "save" the ill or especially the healthy users and suppliers with mandatorysentencing them as a deterrent.

Tobacco has 650 factories pumping out chemicals to go into non Native American cigarettes and never whispered by Congress, Liberals or General Surgeons. After 30 years @ 450,000 deaths a year there is still no warning of these chemical additions or their possible contribution to tobacco related deaths. And again the $80 billion spent by Medicare is also $80billion reasons to perpetuate. 650 chemicals NOT included in cannabis, yet readily compared at every chance by vested interest propagandist like the DEA, ONDCP, DARE the Partnership and Family Research coincidentally sponsored by the very same Chemical corporations.*** As we farm out our working class seniors to Rest Home Warehouses and arm guard our kids from other kids rights to bare Nuclear arms we can still DARE to wave that red white and blue Chinese sweatshop Iraqi crude plastic proudly to the world and teach another generation the lies agreed upon by a minority of wealth, trickled down to the naive digging in the dirt to search for the American Dream. In the land of the 2 million imprisoned, 2 million homeless minimum wage increase deterrents and 2 million millionaires. While 40,000 starve in the world each day we keep the planets most nutritionally complete food illegal**. While Pharmaceuticals like Thalidomide get FDA re-approved in weeks, Cannabis is left lost in Bureaucracies maze going on three years. It is illegal to grow hemp for fuel while the Noreast freezes and the left coast stays rolling dark. A Hemp fueled car will visit the Bay Area this week while most of the nations press and reps stand by without comment. While kids get sick in "Golf" Wars protecting poison replaced 70 years ago with biomass shelved and outlawed. The Arctic is now to be exploited for more fossil fuels that perpetuate this very dysfunctional society.

The product of the war on some drugs help maintain our Fascist way of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness at an unfair price to the majority who can't afford it. Protections meant for every citizen lost with a penstroke as the thousands of jobs sent overseas to dollar a day wagers. While Bush tax refunds profit the banks or corporations its spent on, another school will go without books or another neighborhood without repairs to the infrastructure, causing future problems much more costly, and the worker willeventually pay for it once again. Unless you have interest in a bank that lends its money at 20% and pays 5% to you in savings. When corporate CEO's sit in office legislating to benefit their own profits over clean air and water, what is that if not Fascism? This war on some people and certain plants has no spectators. We can only openly stand up and speak out against this Fascist war or stay idol and perpetuate it as the majority of nonparticipating citizens allowed it to scapegoat a culture 50 years ago. Profits on misery are not a measure of success. Or strength. Its just crazy.

Blessed are the stoned Re Jamie Pietras's "It's Just a Book" [February 28, villagevoice.com]: With all the protests against Ricardo Cortes's book It's Just a Plant, it is important for cannabis users to know where they stand on the issue in biblical terms. It is biblically correct to re-legalize cannabis, or kaneh bosm ( the Hebrew origin of the word, used in Bibles before the King James version ). It is no accident that the Bible indicates God created all the seed-bearing plants and said they were all good on literally the very first page of Genesis ( 1:11-12 and 29-30 ). The only biblical restriction placed on cannabis is that we use it with thanksgiving: See 1 Timothy 4:1-5, where it even describes who will promote its prohibition-those who have fallen away from the faith. Many people would also like clergy to speak up on this issue since Jesus Christ risked going to jail in order to heal the sick.

New Jersey -- Ricardo Cortes, author of a controversial children's book about marijuana, led a discussion at Terrace Club Friday night on the importance of balanced drug education, in an event hosted by Students for a Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP).

The book, "It's Just a Plant," has attracted widespread attention over its blunt portrayal of marijuana use. The New York Post called is a "pothead parent's dream come true" and Entertainment Weekly labeled it "outrage of the week." It was even denounced on the floor of the House of Representatives, when Indiana Republican Mark Souder said it taught children "how to smoke pot."
