However, the common conception of Western history, presumed to have begun in Greece, progressed through Rome, and culminated in modern Europe and America, is a gross disfiguration of the true events of the past, that has resulted out of a number of prejudices that have plagued European scholarship over the last two hundred and fifty years. There is no such thing as "Western" civilization. A proper examination of the past will reveal that not only did Greece not originate those ideas that characterize Western civilization, but their development through history follows a course significantly different from that narrow conception which is commonly touted.
