"Removing prohibitionist barriers to facilitate cultivation of Cannabis is the single greatest shift in policy that would economically empower the greatest number of women."
Dear friends,
The follies of mankind are an escalating curse for womankind. In particular, the global impact of Cannabis prohibition is considerably greater for women than it is for men. There are several health-related and cultural factors, backed by relevant statistical data, that support the logical certainty of this statement. Below please find some on-line references that support this statement.
In impoverished agrarian cultures women and children do most of the work in the fields, cooking, and collecting fuel for fires, while bearing, birthing and raising the children. When their men desert them, go off to fight wars, die of AIDS and other diseases, or land in prison, the women are faced with taking care of their families.
"Agricultural and rural development that is equitable, effective and sustainable cannot be pursued without an explicit recognition of the tremendous contribution of rural women to food and agricultural production and their crucial role in determining and guaranteeing food security and well-being for the entire household. In a global atmosphere of increasing poverty, food insecurity, rural out migration and environmental degradation, it will be necessary to assure that all the potential actors in development are given the support and access to resources they need to pursue sustainable livelihoods and strategies for a better life. Within this context, women's empowerment will be central to achieving initiatives aimed at raising levels of nutrition, improving production and distribution of food and agricultural products, and enhancing the living conditions of rural populations." -- From FAO Plan of Action for Women in Development http://www.fao.org/WAICENT/FAOINFO/SUSTDEV/WPdirect/WPre0001.htm
Cannabis prohibition is a violation of people's right to farm the world's most nutritious, useful and potentially abundant agricultural resource. This puts an enormous burden upon women who are denied the option of planting this easily grown, organic crop. The economic impact of prohibition on women, so impoverished, contributes to the overall quality of their lives, education, and finally, their ability to survive and raise healthy children.
Removing prohibitionist barriers to facilitate cultivation of Cannabis is the single greatest shift in policy that would economically empower the greatest number of women. To continue imposing scarcity of an unique and essential food resource means that hundreds of millions of women, and the children who depend upon them, will face unecessary hardship, illness, malnutrition, an increased threat and physical harm of contracting AIDS, and other sexuaslly transmitted diseases.
The UN/FAO must be held accountable for the truth about the therapeutic and nutritional values of Cannabis seed and the practical necessity of allowing people access to this critically determinate resource.
Below please find several on-line references to substantiate this perspective. Comments, observations, and practical support for increasing people's awareness of this situation are encouraged and invited.
for peace
