An Australian researcher has been doing his bit to protect the environment and come up with greener technology by developing biodegradable car parts out of cannabis plants.
It's reported that recyclable body parts could be created out of hemp, the fibrous material that comes from cannabis plants. A team at the University of New South Wales is working on the idea and testing hemp's strength and durability in comparison with metal. It's thought the plant-based parts could actually prove to be more absorbent on impact with other vehicles, but checks need to be carried out to see whether weaknesses develop over time and growth.
This hemp alternative could offer a solution to the disposal of old cars, which is increasingly becoming a problem and could lead to people being forced to pay to get rid of their unwanted vehicles. The recyclable hemp parts would help ease the disposal problem and also make vehicles lighter in weight. Their reduced weight would also be highly advantageous to battery-powered cars. |

In the 1930s the Ford Motor Company also saw a future in biomass fuels. Ford operated a successful biomass conversion plant, that included hemp, at their Iron Mountain facility in Michigan. Ford engineers extracted methanol, charcoal fuel, tar, pitch, ethyl-acetate and creosote. All fundamental ingredients for modern industry and now supplied by oil-related industries.

When Henry Ford recently unveiled his plastic car, the result of 12 years of research, he gave the world a glimpse of the automobile of tomorrow, it's tough panel molded under hydraulic pressure of 1500 lbs. per square inch from a recipe that calls for 70% of cellulose fibers from wheat straw, HEMP, and sisal plus 30% resin binder. The only steel in the car is its tubular welded frame. The plastic car weighs a ton less than a comparable steel car. Manufacturers are already taking a low-priced plastic car to test the public's taste by 1943. |
Henry Ford once built automobile fenders and doors from industrial hemp, saying they were stronger than sheet metal.
Today, companies such as Adidas, Reebok, International Paper, Calvin Klein and Mercedes Benz are eyeing industrial hemp, a tough, fibrous plant with thousands of uses and a colorful past. Mercedes Benz has pledged to build parts such as dashboards from it.
Henry Ford demostrates the streghth of his car, "grown" from hemp and a combination of other annual crops and designed to run on hemp fuel, by smacking it with a crowbar.
The hemp-based plastic body of the car withstood the impacts of the crowbar.
About 10 years ago, Willie Nelson and activist Gatewood Gailbraith drove the entire length of the state of Kentucky in a Mercedes Benz diesel car run entirely on hemp seed oil.

Look at what the UN peacekeepers are getting instead of Humvees;diesel bikes that get up to 120 MPG. Diesels can run on hemp fuel with no modifications.

The photo below shows the current issue M1030 M1 Diesel Kawasaki motorcycle approved by the US Military. It's expected to be adopted by Great Britain and the Pentagon's peace keeping forces as well. This machine (with a kaki paint job) is being deployed with forces near Afghanistan now.

Oh well, what goes around comes around....
If you're blocked going in the front door, go around to the back door....!
Maybe HEMP diesel oil is a way in if the military starts using it...

great find echo
i know in britain plastic parts from old cars have become a massive problem.
at the moment these plastics are shipped abraod to places like germany to be dealt with.
this seems like a way to bypass the whole nightmare by producing a renewable and superior product which also bio-degradable.
apart from the petro-chemical industry , who could object to such a brilliant idea.
henry fords first production car was actualy powered by a hemp bio-fuel and not by petrol (i think) as the oil companies didnt own the planet back then-in fact i dint think they existed.
ahhhh the good old days.
