Funny... that you coul put so many faces there we well know today, and still the song would maintain its mening intact...

Alessandro Manzoni wrote the classic "I Promessi Sposi" (The Betrothed) during the Austrian domination (written between 1821 and 1825, and rewritten in 1840), but not to get in trouble himself, he set the novel a couple of centuries earlier, during the Spanish occupation, so that he could put out of his chest, not blaming the Austrians... but the Spanish. A litterary licence.
