WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The former pop singer Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam, was denied entry to the United States and his flight from London was diverted to Maine, after his name turned up on a watch list, a U.S. transportation security official said.
United Flight 919 enroute to Washington was diverted to Bangor where Islam was questioned and detained by federal authorities who planned to put him on a return flight early Wednesday, the official said.
U.S. Customs and border protection authorities discovered that the name matched a federal watch list by checking passenger information transmitted by the airline after the flight departed from London, the official said.
The Washington Post, citing sources familiar with the event reported that Islam, whose name is listed as "Usef Islam," is on several government watch lists, including the no-fly list.
United Airlines spokesman Jeff Green said the carrier was asked by the Transportation Security Administration to divert the plane to Maine for security reasons.
The TSA had the flight diverted to Maine to keep it out of the Northeast corridor airspace, TSA spokesman Nico Melendez said.
The flight, with the remaining passengers, departed for Dulles International Airport after about four hours on the ground and landed at Dulles around 9 p.m., Melendez said.
Cat Stevens had a string of pop hits in the early 1970s including "Moonshadow" and "Wild World" before converting to Islam in late 1977. |

Yeah, it's getting more rediculous all the time. They DIVERTED the plane because someone on the plane's name was 'Islam" He was QUESTIONED AND DETAINED???
Now that's good PR, very well done, those guys in the administration and the homeland SSecurity office really know how to ruin the American tourist industry and to make sure no one wants to go there anymore.

The number of U.S. citizens fleeing the country to live elsewhere has grown so huge, that a thriving cottage industry has popped up to support it.

The more I look at it, the madder...
Could it simply be that people are turning crazy? or have they always been?
Are their reasons so obscure and sick that we can't fully grasp them because they go beyond our immagination....
Is there such a thing as a forbidden religion?
Is there such a thing as preventive punishment?
Are there... such things as dagerous "given names"?

I'm certain that a post-mortem examination would reveal a serious lack of cannabinoids in their brains. Not kidding.
A fairly recent experiment involved lab mice. Half the mice had fewer naturally occuring endo-cannabinoids in their brains. The other half had regular levels + some added cannabinoids.
The mice were given a maze half filled with water to swim through. A small platform was provided near midway through the maze for the mice to climb up on to rest, before swimming on. This was repeated so the mice would come to expect the platform.
Then one day the platform was moved further down the maze. The mice with average - above average cannabinoid levels arrived at the missing platform area and simply swam on till they found the moved platform.
The mice with a cannabinoid deficiency arrived at the place where the platform was missing and panicked, swimming in circles.
Some people are like that. Many find their way into various bureaucratic positions. They are unable to improvise or think for themselves.
Anyway...it's my theory.

Reminds me kinda of the old Cheech and Chong movie where they are in the desert have a broken car and no spare or whatever but they have a  and somehow think their way thru it.

Well ya can't really blame the poor things for being terrified can you? With all that deeply intellectual music he has written, which he manages to express with the pure, humble and innocent spirit of a child, who could blame them? Kind of like Ruby Ridge. I mean young boys with dogs and women holding babies!!! Now that's scary stuff for sure.
