Cannabis new drug of choice to finance Al Qaida

SPECIAL TO WORLD TRIBUNE.COM
Monday, September 26, 2005

ABU DHABI — Saudi security sources said Sunni insurgents have been smuggling illegal drugs from Iraq to Saudi Arabia to finance insurgency attacks against coalition forces.

The sources said the drugs being smuggling now tend to be cannabis.

"In the space of one year, border police intercepted 10 tons of cannabis coming from Iraq," a Saudi source said. "In the past, the [smuggled] merchandise used to consist of alcoholic beverages and prohibited drugs."

Saudi officials said that from February through August 2005, Saudi authorities captured 682 infiltrators, Middle East Newsline reported. They said that Riyad, which deploys 35,000 troops, has spent more than $1 billion to improve security along the Iraqi border and closed 27 smuggling routes.

The sources said revenues from the smuggling were being shared by Al Qaida operatives in Iraq and Saudi Arabia. They said the money has been used to purchase weapons and finance attacks in both countries.

"We have reason to believe that profits from drug smuggling has been financing militants who are fighting Iraqi and coalition forces and facilitating the illegal entry of people into the country," a Saudi security source told the London-based A-Sharq Al Awsat daily. "It also supports Al Qaida's terrorist activities inside the kingdom."

"Since March 2004, we have given special training to officers to monitor the Iraqi border," a Saudi security source told the Riyad-based Al Watan daily. "There are 34 fixed units and 37 mobile units monitoring the Iraqi border."

The sources said Al Qaida has turned to drug smuggling after Saudi authorities decreased the flow of contributions from the kingdom. They said that over the last year Saudi intelligence has been monitoring the flow of funds to Al Qaida.

The sources said Al Qaida's network in Iraq has sought Saudi volunteers, largely for their willingness to transfer money to the insurgency. They said hundreds of Saudis who infiltrated to Iraq were believed to have brought in up to $15,000 each.

Many of the Saudis have arrived in Iraq via Syria. The sources said Saudis sought by authorities left the kingdom for Yemen and then made their way to Syria. Still others entered Iraq from neighboring Iran.

A senior Saudi official said up to 3,000 Saudis were said to be fighting the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq. The official told a briefing to Saudi journalists in mid-2005 that the volunteers joined the Al Qaida network led by Abu Mussib Al Zarqawi.

Large Shipment of Cannabis Seized in Saudi Arabia

26/09/2005
By Abdullah El Hosny

Dammam, Asharq Al-Awsat- The Anti-Narcotics Department at King Khaled International Airport in Riyadh arrested a group of drug traffickers and seized a large container with over a ton of Cannabis, Asharq Al-Awsat has learned.

Authorities were alerted about the Cannabis shipment, which had recently arrived from the city of Dammam in the Eastern Province after receiving an anonymous "tip off". The source revealed to the Anti-Narcotics Department that a group of individuals would be arriving at King Khaled International Airport with a very large shipment of Cannabis. The Drug traffickers had planed on storing the drugs in a safe location before distributing the illegal substance all across the Kingdom.

Asharq Al-Awsat has also learned that the drug traffickers were Pakistani in origin, and had smuggled the drugs from Pakistan to the kingdom by way of the United Arab Emirates.

Earlier this month a Saudi official told Asharq Al-Awsat that that drug smuggling, especially cannabis, from Iraq into Saudi Arabia has increased and that the Drug trade was financing militants fighting the Iraqi and multinational armies and facilitating the illegal entry of men into the country. It also supports al Qaeda’s terrorist activities inside the Kingdom.

This could be a blessing in disguise - I mean, if it is becoming a real problem, then legalising/regulating would kill a big source of income for Al Qaeda, no?

I think that angle would strike a chord with many people.

hi all

it would be tragic to think that cannabis was in any way contributing to the 2000 young men and women who have been killed in Iraq.

or is there something else going on here ?

what confuses me about all this is that the area they are talking about is part of the old silk route.

the old caravan serai's have been transporting cannabis back and forth along that route for hundreds , maybe even , thousands of years.

in fact it has been the main route of cannabis transport from the present day going back to before history was writen down.

this is the very same route cannabis first took when it was introduced to europe , africa and western asia.

i worry that this is part of a global plan to tie in the 'war' against cannabis and its users with the war against the imaginary 'terrorists'.

if i am right it is tantamount to declaring all cannabis users to be aiding 'terrorists'.it will efectively label us as 'enemies of the state'.

for our corporate demi-gods this has a number of advantages.such as :-

it justifies maintaining an enormous standing secret police (hitler only dreamed of a gestapo as large as the cia.)

it deters most people from supporting an end to prohibition of 'our' religious and medicinal herb.
most people now support an end to prohibition , but that will change when we are labeled as 'terrorists'.

it protects our demi-gods corporate interests by stifling the superior , sustainable products produced by hemp.

it seems turning the civil police lose on us was not enough , now they want to unleash the dogs of war on us too !

it looks to me as if the war against us is about to get even more intense.even more 'military'.

of course i am just a paranoid , pessimistic , conspiracy theorist ........

PEACE.

I believe heroin and opium would still be the main source of financing through drugs but what ever.

Our tax dollars are financing the killing of thousands of innocent Arabs across the Middle East, what’s worse?

not only is it ridiculous to think cannabis somehow finances terrorism, but its reaching really far even for the government.

These are lies told by uneducated people who are only trying to perpetuate thier own agendas. Or, Maybe they now damn well what they are doing.

either way, its fucking pathetic to think anywhere along these lines.

What a load of crap! What 'mule' would risk dying of dehydration while carrying bales of weed hundreds of miles across the world's hottest desert?

What make more sense to me is stories like the two british soldiers arrested with arab costums and anti-tank weapons in southern Iraq last week. That to me sounds like terrorist activities.

The marijuana sounds like angels of mercy providing medical and psychological relief for the damage done by the Amerikan & allied forces.

those british soldiers dressed as arabs were not ordinary british soldiers.that was a classic combined op. between MI.6 (brit secret police) and the SAS. (special air service , an elite military unit recruited from commando and parachute regiments)

their job was to stir up hatred between sunni and shi'ite muslims.

during the 'troubles' in northern ireland several so called terrorist bombs and murders were later proved to have been conducted by elite british military units like these.

caravans , which used to consist of camel trains but now consist of lorries , have been trading cannabis along this trade route for thousands of years.

the route used to link china europe , the middle east , africa , asia and russia.the beduin people are most famous for their caravans but other peoples used to ply their trade along this route too.it is probably one of mans most ancient trade routes.
