To members and friends of the Interfaith Drug Policy Initiative --
Please contact Florida Gov. Jeb Bush to urge a merciful commutation of
sentence for pain patient Richard Paey. This is a quick and easy way to
make a difference in one man’s life this holiday season, while shedding
light on the larger issues involved.
Everyone who cares about human rights and justice -- especially people
of faith -- needs to pile on the pressure. Read on to learn about the
shocking details of this case.
Richard Paey, a man living with multiple sclerosis as well as severe
pain from a serious car accident and a botched back operation, was
sentenced to 25 years for forging prescriptions in order to get enough
pain medication.
He was subject to a 25-year minimum penalty because he illegally
possessed Percocet and other pills weighing more than 28 grams, enough
to classify him as a drug trafficker even though there was absolutely no
evidence that he was selling the drugs that he obtained.
Richard's case has been profiled on 20/20, Nightline, and most recently
on 60 Minutes. See
http://www.sptimes.com/2006/12/10/Opinion/A_drug_sentence_witho.shtml
for a quick synopsis.
This case is a compelling example of what’s wrong with the “War on
Drugs”: Too many people simply don’t care that our prisons are
overflowing with people involved with drugs. Too many hearts are closed
to people who are punished for using drugs for pleasure or because
they’re addicted.
In this case, the extreme cruelty of the drug war is finally exposed in
a way that should shock the conscience of everyone. Who could possibly
think that it’s okay to punish someone who violated the drug laws in
order to treat debilitating physical pain? Are the drug laws so
sacrosanct that even pain patients should be sacrificed on the
“anti-drug” alter?
Even Judge James Seals in Florida’s 2nd District Court of Appeal called
the sentence “unusual, illogical, and unjust.” Although the court has
recognized that Richard's sentence is unjust, in a bizarre twist they
provided no remedy except for Richard to petition Governor Bush to
commute his sentence. Richard’s lawyer has done that for him, and now we
need to help.
Will you please help us put pressure on Gov. Bush to let this
wheelchair-bound pain patient go free?
Please call Governor Jeb Bush TODAY at 850-488-7146 and ask him to
commute the sentence of Richard Paey (pronounced pie-EE).
Once you've done that, the most important thing you can do is get others
to contact the Governor.
Florida drug policy reform activist John Chase has 700 stamped postcards
ready to send to Gov Bush.
*** How many do you need for your congregation? ***
Just send an email to John at chaseng@mindspring.com. Let him know how
many to send you. Then, find people to fill them out and drop them into
a mailbox before December 27.
Thank you in advance for doing your part to bring attention to this
unconscionable injustice.
