What's it all about?
It boils down to this: the government wants to be able to lock terror suspects up for a longer period of time than they are currently allowed to without having to charge them with any particular crime.
The plan is to increase the number of days the police can hold a suspect for without bringing a charge against them (pre-charge detention) to 42. The current limit is 28. If the government gets its way, a suspect will be able to be held for a total of six weeks without being charged.
The government only wants to have the power to implement the 42-day detention on a contingency basis if there is a compelling operational need.

Who's a terrorist and who's a suspect. Frightens the hell out of me. sitting in a scummy cell with no cloths for 42 days, but there again it's all to do with whether the desk Sargent likes you or not. |
