Pot activist Marc Emery granted bail
Canadian Press
Tuesday, August 02, 2005
VANCOUVER -- Pot activist Marc Emery has been granted bail on charges that he sold marijuana seeds to people in the United States.
The U.S. is seeking the extradition of Emery, the leader of the B.C. Marijuana Party.
He was indicted by a grand jury in the U.S. and faces a minimum of 10 years in jail for the drug charges.
Associate Chief Justice Patrick Dohm allowed Emery to go free on $50,000 bail.
He said Emery can continue his political work for the B.C. Marijuana Party, which is fighting for legalization of pot.
Emery will also be allowed to continue running his bookstore, where he allegedly sold pot seeds, and can resume operations at his Cannabis Culture magazine.
His lawyer John Conroy said the case against Emery is unfair because Canadian police have never charged him while he openly sold seeds for nine years.
"Even Health Canada was directing people to online websites like Mr. Emery's to buy seeds. And now they're helping the Americans," he said at a news conference outside the court.
Emery and two others are accused by the U.S. of conspiracy to manufacture marijuana, conspiracy to distribute marijuana seeds and conspiracy to engage in money laundering.

Update posted on CC forums:
Greg and Marc are still in jail. The judge (Patrick Dohm) said we had to get 5 different people to put up $5,000 each in surity for Greg, and 4 people with $10,000 each in surities for Marc, including another $10,000 cash.
However, when we brought in people to get Greg and Marc out, we were told that we had to have property owners, not just surities (cars, stocks, etc.) and therefore, we need 9 people to put their property up for Marc and Greg.
Michelle is out today, and will be working at the BCMP bookstore tomorrow to start raising funds.
The three of them will be able to communicate for work purposes only. Marc and Greg are allowed at the CC office and the BCMP store. Michelle is allowed at the BCMP store.
WE NEED PROPERTY OWNERS! With hope, we can get Greg and Marc out tomorrow. Anyone who can offer help, please call Kirk Tousaw at 604-836-1420. |

With the internet though and his "supposed" millions of dollars in sales to Americans, I guess that justifies what they did. What gets me, is why is our police force so gung ho to aid the DEA? _________________
