Organization: Interfaith Drug Policy Initiative
Job Title: Religious Outreach Coordinator
Reports to: Associate Director
Application Deadline: March 20, 2006
Starting Date: April 17, 2006
Ending Date: September 17, 2006
Compensation: $25,000 as an independent contractor to cover five months of salary and expenses.
The Interfaith Drug Policy Initiative seeks an experienced community organizer who is a dynamic person of faith (ideally a clergyperson, seminary graduate, etc.) to build support among the religious community for taxing and regulating marijuana (similarly to alcohol).
Applicant must be able to articulate the merits of taxing and regulating marijuana from a moral perspective that is persuasive to the full spectrum of mainstream people of faith.
The religious outreach organizer’s goal will be to persuade faith leaders and organizations to endorse a resolution calling for this public policy reform and then to cultivate relationships with those people in a way that maximizes their influence on elected officials and the general public.
Applicant must be willing to relocate to wherever organizing is needed to support specific public policy efforts underway at the state or local level.
Duties and responsibilities:
- work closely with IDPI's associate director and with the leaders of various state and local campaigns to determine where efforts can be most fruitful
- cold call and meet face-to-face with religious leaders to identify and activate support
- prepare supportive religious leaders to meet with legislators, talk to the media, and to persuade their colleagues and congregants

- write letters-to-the editor, speeches, sermons, and letters to legislators
- become an expert on the religious and secular arguments for drug policy / criminal justice reform
- keep good records of relationships
Applicants must excel at the following:
* quickly adjusting work activities to the ever-changing needs of various public policy campaigns
* self-motivation and ability to work independently
* connecting with people who may have very different political and spiritual beliefs
* cranking out massive numbers of persuasive phone calls and email messages
* giving clear instructions to religious leaders on what needs to be done and how to do it
She/he must be results oriented, persuasive, focused, organized, meticulous, resourceful, motivated, and excellent at giving and receiving feedback.
Preference will be given to candidates who:
- have legislative advocacy experience
- have a track record as an effective and well-respected religious leader
* NOTE: Since this position is structured for an independent contractor, the organizer will be responsible for all expenses associated with excelling at this effort such as: travel expenses, computer, cell phone, copies, etc. The expected business expenses for this job will be $500 - $1000 per month.
The Interfaith Drug Policy Initiative is leading the drug policy reform movement's efforts to mobilize mainstream people of faith behind more compassionate and less coercive drug policies. IDPI works with clergy and denominational bodies from across the religious spectrum at both the state and federal levels to affect policy changes including: repealing mandatory minimum drug sentences, supporting clean syringe access for IV drug users, allowing the medical use of marijuana, restoring college financial aid to drug offenders, diverting drug offenders into treatment instead of prison, and ending marijuana prohibition.
