Is Global Warming The Biggest Threat to Civilization?
Forget about terrorism and oil wars as being the biggest threats to civilization, global warming is about to escalate exponentially, according to a Pentagon report from 2003.
http://www.grist.org/pdf/AbruptClimateChange2003.pdf
Meterologists consider this past week (21 - 28 august, 2005) one of the "strangest" on record as the largest hurricane on record in the Gulf of Mexico is about to strike Florida again but this time upgraded from a category 3 to a 4. While mega sized fires blaze across the drought partched lands of Portugal, which have not seen rain in over a year; relentless rains pummel most of SE Europe washing away ancient mountain villages and turning farm fields into lakes.

Two years ago, an ice field about the size of Alaska broke off from the ice sheet covering Antartica. Scientists have said that nothing this large has broken off in 10,000 years. Permafrost in Siberia, Alaska, and Canada are thawing and releasing the greenhouse gas methan which is 10x more potent than carbon monoxide. Polar bears foraging for food are forced into contact with humans at an accellerating rate, putting the bears in danger of being terminated. The Gulf of Mexico has seen 11 hurricanes so far this season. The average is 4 at this point.
What are your beliefs about global warming? Is this the end? Was this "prophesied" about? Is this caused by the Hand of God? Or could this be the works of the hands of mankind? But most importantly what do you believe can be done to slow down, reduce, or possibly even stop global warming?
Maybe you don't believe in global warming, or you think it doesn't matter. Let's hear everyone's opinions!
Worldstorms.com is a good resource for anyone and I'll post their link here again. They have links to stories, news articles, sciences journals, and from their own reporters. The information is pretty much laid out for you to decide. (They also have links to various news sites that give an inside perspective behind the headline news.)

I have been a firm believer in global warming since I first heard of it. There is no doubt the climate is changing. There are those who would like to keep the panic at bay by saying there is no way to tell, but I believe they are just covering up the inevitable. Mankind will be the creator of his own destruction. Everything we do now produces heat.....even running our computers is pumping heat into the air... Add to that the gases that are constantly pumped into the atmosphere just by automobiles alone, and you've got a serious issue on your hands. That's without mentioning manufacturing.... I am a firm believer that the world is ALLREADY over-populated, and it will be dang hard to get people to give up all of the modern conveniences overnight in an effort to save ourselves. Nobody takes this stuff seriously. Just look at any big city's roadways. They are constantly choked by thousands of automobiles with gas jumping $1/gallon in one year's time... I really don't think there is a chance for turning back now....Our government lies right to people's faces, and they don't care even when they know it's a lie. The mentality of people today will be their un-doing. _________________ -Brother Adam (we are all one family)

Take heart. Most people are Bozo's, yes...why, here comes one now:
But those of us on these and similar forums tend to be "Cultural Creatives" who are at the cutting edge of thought -- we tend to "see" trends and such before the rest of the "herd" --
Things will get worse before they get better, sure. They have to. A paradigm has to be obviously crumbling before the herd catches on.
We see the problems -- and we also see the solutions.
So long as we have that, there is hope.
One simple answer is biofuels. Ten years ago, it was just folks like us talking it up in the internet. Now, biofuels are an entrepreneural enterprise that is popping up all over the world.
Biodiesel reduces polution by 90% -- it's a solid answer to both our environmental problems and the problem of perpetual war-for-oil.
The politicians will be the last ones to catch on -- and the first to take the credit.
Real people with real solutions ARE the SOLUTION.
We're still deep in the dark tunnel -- but at least we can see the light.
Bliss,

Nine U.S. States Break with Bush on Greenhouse Gases
August 25, 2005 — By Reuters
NEW YORK — Nine northeastern U.S. states are working on a plan to cap and then reduce the level of greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, the first U.S. deal of its kind and one which would see the region breaking with President Bush who refused to sign the Kyoto Protocol.
The move comes as California, Washington and Oregon are considering a similar pact -- a dynamic environmentalists say could pressure the federal government to adopt a national law.
Bush refused to sign the Kyoto Protocol, the greenhouse gas reduction plan already adopted by over 150 countries.
Under the plan being worked on, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont would cap carbon dioxide emissions at 150 million tons a year -- roughly equal to the average emissions in the highest three years between 2000 and 2004.
Starting in 2015, the cap would be lowered, and emissions would be cut by 10 percent in 2020.
Each state legislature would have to approve the caps, said Dennis Schain, a spokesman for Connecticut's Department of Environmental Protection.
"This is a process that would be an agreement among states and to really implement it and have a firm commitment, the states will each have to approve legislation and regulations to meet these conditions," he told Reuters.
The draft is being circulated among industries, power companies and environmental groups for feedback, he said. The group hopes to reach a final agreement in September.
Phil Cherry, policy director at Delaware's Department of Natural Resources, also confirmed details of the pact.
Scientists believe carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases cause global warming that is affecting coastal areas, icebergs and wildlife. Around 40 percent of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions come from fossil fuel power plants.
The United States is the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide. The Bush administration wants cuts to be voluntary and resists mandatory measures it says would hurt economic growth.
Many international leaders have criticized Bush's refusal to sign Kyoto, which is meant as a first step toward braking a rise in global temperatures from a build-up of gases from fossil fuels emitted by power plants, factories and cars.
In the absence of national control on emissions, Schain said: "This seems to be the appropriate course of action."
The so-called Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative would explore a market-driven cap-and-trade system where businesses must trim emissions under set limits or buy credits from companies that have complied with the limits.
Environmentalists praised the proposed plan.
"It moves the United States further toward doing something about the problem," said Kert Davies of Greenpeace in Washington, D.C. "That eventually allows us back into the global solving of this problem."
The deal was brokered by New York Republican Gov. George Pataki, who is weighing a White House run in 2008.
Pataki spokesman Andrew Rush said no final deal had been reached but, "We've made a lot of progress and we look forward to reaching a final agreement."
Political experts note such a plan brings Pataki national attention. "This is another clear signal that George Pataki is positioning himself on the national stage to run for president," said political strategist Hank Sheinkopf.
A regional emissions control program would likely cause higher energy prices for power company customers in the Northeast, but Delaware's Cherry said the states had not yet decided on a method to combat rising costs.

I agree one hundred percent. I just hope there are enough of us left over after everything hits rock bottom to help rebuild things in a positive, peaceful manner. _________________ -Brother Adam (we are all one family)

What about the north atlantic current?
Did anyone else here see "the day after tommorow"? A chunk of ice broke off in that movie too, but not even close to as big as alaska. There were hurricanes initially. Could this be happening?
I know its just a movie, and hollywood has a way of making up shit, but works of fiction have a way of coming true. _________________ www.shoutwire.com

Z, check out the link I posted about the Pentagon's warnings. It does suggest that the North Atlantic Conveyer System will probably shut down as well. Could it bring another ice age? I don't know. I guess we'll need to wait and see. _________________ "Penalties against the possession of a drug

About 12,700 years ago, as Earth emerged from the most recent ice age and began to warm, the Conveyor was disrupted. Within a decade, average temperatures in the North Atlantic region plummeted nearly 5° Celsius.
This cold period, known as the Younger Dryas, lasted 1,300 years. It is named after an Arctic wildflower. Scientists have found substantial evidence that cold-loving dryas plants thrived during this era in European and US regions that today are too warm. Deep-sea sediment cores show that icebergs extended as far south as the coast of Portugal. The Younger Dryas ended as abruptly as it began. Within a decade, North Atlantic waters and the regional climate warmed again to pre-Younger Dryas levels.
A similar cooling occurred 8,200 years ago. It lasted only about a century—a blip in geological time, but a catastrophe if such a cooling occurred today.
Scientific evidence concludes that if the north atlantic current is disrupted, we are all fucked. _________________ www.shoutwire.com

Ever read about the "flash frozen" woolly mammoths uncovered in Siberia? About a decade ago scientists in Russia recovered at least one woolly mammoth buried in the Siberian permafrost. The mammoth had been consistantly frozen since the last Ice Age due to the fact that until recently, permafrost was just that, ground that never warmed enough to defrost.
The world's leading scientists observed or participated in the tests, which among other things found that the mammoth had frozen to death while grazing. It was found standing, encased in ice, and had undigested food in it's stomach.
Undigested food in the stomach? How could a large mammal, who is covered with a coat of long hair and accustomed to extreme winters, as was the woolly mammoth, be found dead from hypothermia? I mean, what kind of weather conditions does it take to freeze this animal to death while it's standing and eating?
There are stories circulating that the scientists celebrated by sharing a bit of mammoth steak because the meat was so fresh. _________________ "Penalties against the possession of a drug

Hey folks, we're on the slippery slope if not into the abyss and oblivion but sure as hell into big CHANGES---it's the nature of the cosmos.
Whole worlds come and go, civilisations rise and fall, Nothing lasts. Dinosaurs, mammoths----human beings? Everybody will be hanging on to their crate in the flood. The sun sets only to rise on another world. Aeons of cataclysmic changes have preceded us---so what's a little bit of global warming on God's golfball?
I mean us more sensitive green types can do what we can to prevent it and respect mother earth but we are in the midst of inevitabilty, an inexorable momentum that can't now be stopped.
Geronimo! (as they say---a funny expression that) And he knew apocalypse intimately. He fought it but he had to go down. Karma, destiny.
I don't think I'm being fatalistic. The situation speaks for itself. It's too late. But nothing to get upset about. The majority of people are like drunken sailors dancing and singing on a slowly sinking ship---media hypnotised and tranced out by 'having' things....slaves to Mammon.
It can break your heart but we have to go through the grief and move on in consciousness.
What d'ya think? _________________ don't pull no punches but don't push the river |

I think that's very well said Rogerstanden. The part about drunken sailors dancing on a sinking ship hits the nail on the head for sure.
You also offer a positive idea to keep our conscious in check. Mother nature will soon cleanse herself of all the damage we have done, and she may cleanse herself of us at the same time, but should we be worried? Yes, to an extent....but then again, we really need to live for today and work on fullfilling our destiny while we are here in this life. I say do what you can to avoid destroying the world that sustains us....but don't linger on impending doom! _________________ -Brother Adam (we are all one family)
