Hyped on hemp
Local designer offers web-based custom service for this 'amazing fabric'
By JENNIFER PARKS, EDMONTON SUN
When Dorothea-Christiana Naber gets to talking about her custom creations, she sounds more like an artist-activist than a fashion designer.
Asymmetrical hemlines, beautiful brocades, unifying sashes, hoods and hemp all accent her "harmonious" pieces.
"I wanted to create something the eye loves to look at again and again," says Naber, who runs the web-based custom clothing company Dorothea-Christiana Couture from Edmonton.
"Hemp is such an amazing fabric. Too bad it's got a bad rap. It's durable, cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and it doesn't wear out, it wears in. We need to free hemp by bringing it forth in fashion more," says Naber, 29.
The designer, who received a human ecology degree in clothing and textiles from the University of Alberta in 1999, decided to launch a web-based business to cater to high-end customers who prefer individualized service and a designer fit.
