The French show us how we should behave when the powers that be put the wrong politician into power. Sarkozy is cosy with Bush, a place most French detest.

MORE than 700 cars were set alight and 600 people arrested in violence that hit cities across France after the presidential election victory of conservative leader Nicolas Sarkozy.

Seventy-eight police officers were injured in incidents after his triumph over the Socialist Segolene Royal in Sunday's election.

Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Toulouse and Rennes were among cities hit by violence blamed by police on extreme-left groups, anarchists and apolitical gangs who clashed with police.

A total of 730 cars were burned in the high-immigrant suburbs where Mr Sarkozy is a hated figure for his tough stance on immigration and law and order. Police said a total of 592 people were arrested.

Ms Royal had warned in the run-up to Sunday's election that Mr Sarkozy's victory could see the country slide into violence and unrest, similar to the rioting that rocked French suburbs in late 2005.

At the height of those riots, about 700 cars were being burned every night in cities across France for about three weeks. About 300 public buildings were attacked.

Wild celebrations broke out in the capital Sunday night, with 30,000 supporters packing the Place de la Concorde where Mr Sarkozy delivered a victory speech, pledging to bring reconciliation.

Riot police fired tear gas at stone-throwing protestors who burned an effigy of Mr Sarkozy in the Place de la Bastille, a rallying point for Ms Royal supporters.

There were also incidents with far-left groups in the cities of Lyon, Toulouse, Rennes and Nantes, police said.

Protests

On Monday, about 500 left-wing protesters staged a demonstration in central Paris, chanting "Paris, get up, wake up!" and "Sarko, fascist!"

The protest near the Place de la Bastille had been relatively peaceful until about 9pm (5am AEST) when hardcore protesters arrived dressed in black, turning over trash bins, attacking telephone cabins and smashing windows.

Numbers had swollen from earlier when 200 demonstrators gathered at the same square – the scene of violent clashes with police the night before – blocking traffic with metal barriers and camping in the centre of the road.

Chanting "Sarko, fascist, the people will get you!" and "Sarko, rabble, you've got to go!" – referring to Mr Sarkozy's description of young troublemakers as "racaille (rabble)" – they draped a French flag scrawled with the slogan "Resist Sarkozy" across the steps of the Bastille Opera house.

About 800 anti-Sarkozy protesters, mostly students, also demonstrated on Monday in the city of Caen in Normandy, west of Paris, but no major incidents were reported.

What precisely is wrong with the election results in France?

From the Cannabis perspective, there wasn´t any anti-prohibition candidate in the first place. The French still hate themselves too much to hold such positive ambitions.

My personal impression is that Europe has got enough of the same old "if America says the weather is nice we will unfold our umbrellas" attitude that was all that the previous administrations had to offer.

From the perspective of the environment, a car that is being burned down produces even more pollution than one that is driven. Dozens of random cars (if not more) set ablaze every night continuously over the last 1.5 years had their explicable effect - for every car destroyed there is a random owner grieving the loss of his property who will vote for anyone who promises to end the vandalism.

I do not see any purpose in those fires, except maybe... I would not be surprised if the car industry was bribing the gang leaders.
