UK maintains alert status after terror reports

LONDON (Reuters) - The government is maintaining a heightened state of alert following reports al Qaeda is targeting unspecified sites in Britain.

But it declined to follow the United States, which moved armed police to protect financial centres in New York and Washington after warnings al Qaeda bombers might strike.

"There is a continuing threat which has remained high for some time, and the public should remain alert but not alarmed," a Home Office spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

The latest warning in the United States was prompted by Pakistan's capture of a suspected al Qaeda computer expert -- Muhammad Naeem Noor Khan, also called Abu Talha -- which yielded documents, computers, surveillance reports and sketches.

Newspapers said on Tuesday the material also indicated threats against unspecified targets in the

UK.

The Home Office and police declined to comment on the reports, citing their policy of not discussing intelligence matters.

"We are at a heightened state of alert and that remains the position," the Home Office spokeswoman said.

"The government would never hesitate to issue a warning if that was the best way to protect any community or venue facing a specific and credible threat."

This month the government is sending every home in Britain a public information leaflet telling people what to do in the case of a terrorist attack.
