As some of you may know from the creative team board there is an annual event that has been held since the 1970's at the University Of Illinois known as Hash Wednesday. There are talks, demonstrations, music, fun and festivities all in celebration and support of cannabis.

I attended a meeting of the UIUC NORML & Students for Sensible Drug Policy(SSDP) meeting monday evening to see what plans were being set up for the event this year. Im pleased to say that it looks like these students have a good plan in motion to have media attend, speakers, flyers to post, fun and peace for all. There is usualy music, and other things going on the whole afternoon.

I talked to them about religious use and they were interested. I am still planning to hand out flyers at the event that I am going to print out on my own. I also hope to have some Sacrament tags to pass out(thanks for the idea Roger) but this is uncertain do to my current finalcial troubles.

They talked about having a jpint rolling contest(more as a fun activity then a competition), and I suggested they use legal smoking alternatives for the herb. I am going to supply them with a couple links to good bulk wholesale priced herb dealers I know of.

There are a lot of instructuional Hemp, Cannabis, Medical Use etc. speakers lined up to attend. I think this might be one of the best HW events in many years(hope so anyway).

Id like to invite anyone in the Champaign-Urbana Illinois area, or anyone planning to be in the area that day, to attend and see whats up.

I will post more info on what the speaker schedule is in the next couple weeks. They are off for break next week, but the following Monday I should be able to get a copy of the schedule(if not before).

Updates when I get them.

Peace Smile

Ok here is an update for those who live in the area and plan to attend...

I’m going to be handing out flyers of some sort and Sacrament Tags(thanks Roger).. I’m also looking into taking free will donations for the THC-Ministry. The donations thing might be a problem, due to University policies. I am looking more into that. But if I cant take donations, its my hope that a lot of the folks I give Tags to will help strengthen and support our Ministry.

There will be a lot of independent activities(or so there has been in the past) like people playing instruments, singing etc. etc. all around.

But there are also scheduled Microphone time & Teach-ins going on.
Here is that list(may be changed/updated more) Also I think there is a brownie sale and some other activities.

Mic time: starting at 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Introduction -Danielle Schumacher
HEA - Carolyn Sundlof
Student Drug Testing info
Medical Marijuana in Illinois - Matwood of IDEAL Reform/ Frank
Hemp - speaker TBA
Columbia - Neil Parthun
Asset Forfeiture - Phil Lowman of Students for Individual Liberties
Open Mic time
Closing -Caren Thomas of IL NORML and IDEAL Reform
Into to teach-ins -Danielle Schumacher

TEACH-INS
11-12 Know Your Rights - ACLU
1-2 Student Drug Testing
2-3 Medical Marijuana in Illinois
3-4 Decriminalization - ACLU

There is also going to be a showing of the film "Busted" on 4/20 - info as to time and place available at the wednesday event. There is also a benifit concert before hash wednesday, but I cant find the notes on that. I will update if I find them.

More as I get it.

Peace

It could be realy nice, a total rain out, or even snow haha.

Its hard to say here. We have had some nice spring-like days the last few days now with mild-cool temps...
But there has been snow after easter here before to.. So I hope and pray. Smile

I may come and when the day get's nearer, maybe I'll contact you so we could meet there. I'll have to see how my schedule is and how I am feeling, but it would be nice to go.

Marijuana Myths Dispelled at the 7th Annual Hash Wednesday on April
14, 2004

Urbana, IL – April 14, 2004 – Hash Wednesday, sown from the seeds of
celebration, proves also to be a day of education and unification.
This year the event hosted by the UIUC chapters of the National
Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) and Students
for a Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP) will feature speakers from many of
the major drug reform organizations in the country on the University
Quad.

A sample of those providing educational speeches and teach-ins
include Matt Atwood, executive director of the healthcare policy
reform group IDEAL Reform, Caren Thomas of IDEAL Reform and Illinois
NORML, and the student chapter of the ACLU. Representatives from
campus organizations including the university chapter of the American
Civil Liberties Union, Students for Individual Liberties, and Amnesty
International, will be present to extend the issues further into the
community.

This large-scale event will rudely awaken the importance of America’s
drug policy in everyone’s lives. Students and community members will
benefit from information on student drug testing in schools, racial
disparity in prisons, the Higher Education Act, and medical
marijuana. “Everyday Americans suffer from the Drug War whether they
realize it or not, be it from the violence that prohibition fosters
to the alarming rates at which we incarcerate African-American males
for drug offences to the suffering of the sick and dying because they
have been refused necessary medicine.” – Frank Nardulli, Ideal Reform

Hash Wednesday has been around since the 70s, but this is only the
second year UIUC NORML/SSDP has been around to organize. “We’re
hoping to build on last year’s success and reach the potential upheld
in the deeper history of the event,” says Danielle Schumacher,
President of the UIUC chapter of NORML/SSDP. For more information
about this day check out the UIUC NORML/SSDP website at
www.uiucnorml.org. Organized events for Hash Wednesday will begin at
11 am, but feel free to come early and stay late for informative
speakers will be around all day! Come debate, destress, and discover!

Well the event went off really well. There was lots of music, talks, contests, free brownies etc. etc....

I was sick from food poisoning all night tuesday night. So I was really afraid I wouldnt make it. I got about 3 hours sleep and got up. I managed to feel a little better later in the morning and decided to try it. Then my car wouldnt start. So I got my bicycle out(hadnt ridden in a long time) and walked it down to a service station to air up the tires. Its a bit of a ride to get to campus from my house, but I made it.

There were lots of interesting people to meet. I had made up a small mini-flyer on the THC-Ministry that has 4 to a page. I handed these out by the NORML booth. I handed out the flyers and also gave people a Sacrament Tag(thanks Roger). Even though I was late I still handed out about 300 flyers/tags and I was there for about 5 hours.

It was a wonderfull day. I met lots of cool people, and most folks were interested in what I had to say. I may not know much, but they seemed to like what I said. So I must have done something right.

One guy I handed a flyer/tag to later came by and thanked me for them. I told him that I believed that the religious use front was the strongest defense we have going for us right now. And he agreed. He then handed me his card and said good luck and left. Turns out he was Bryan W. Brickner Ph.D. Chair of Illinois NORML and author of the book Promise Keepers So it was pretty neat to have met him.

Anyway there are more events comming up and I hope to make it to them. I now have a simple flyer that gives me 4 handouts per page so its not to expensive to make a lot of handouts. I also have more tags, and there was certainly intrest in them.

Anyway I just thought id update this for anyone interested.

Peace Smile
