McALLEN, Texas -- Three Mission men were indicted Thursday on charges accusing them of shooting a female immigration agent while trying to protect Mexican drug shipments.
Abel Rangel, 33; Leobardo Villarreal, 22, and Juan Villarreal, 25, are charged with the attempted murder and assault of a federal officer, conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute kilogram quantities of marijuana and the use of a firearm during these crimes of violence and drug trafficking.
Investigators say Leobardo Villarreal and Juan Villarreal were near the Rio Grande on May 5 keeping an eye out for agents while Rangel arranged for several hundred pounds of marijuana to be brought across the border.
They drove up to the car of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent, demanded she get out of the car, and then shot into the car when she refused, authorities say. She was wounded in the foot. The men then fled.
All three are in federal custody.
The indictment does not say whether the two Villarreals are related.

This is the absurdity of prohibition. This officer wouldn’t have been killed if these men wouldn’t have been facing prison and fines for cannabis. The harsher the penalties, the more violence associated with it. When will they learn?
