The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given approval to Valeant Pharmaceuticals International's synthetic Cannabis drug Cesamet.
The drug is meant for use in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy to control nausea and vomiting when traditional drug and control methods do not work. Valeant touts the drug's durability, saying it only requires two daily doses.
Cesamet's active ingredient is a synthetic form of the active ingredient in Cannabis, or marijuana.
Valeant acquired Cesamet from Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE: LLY) in 2004 and currently sells Cesamet in Canada.
Cosa Mesa's Valeant (NYSE: VRX) makes and sells nearly 600 prescription and over-the-counter drugs, primarily in the areas of neurology, dermatology and infectious diseases.
