End the War on the Sick
The stigma attached to marijuana as a recreational drug has overshadowed its medical benefits. For people with cancer, AIDS, and other diseases, it can be effective in treating pain and nausea. More and more people are persuaded every day, which is why eight of the eleven states that have passed medical marijuana laws did so through popular ballot initiatives. For years polls have shown that medical marijuana is supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans. When people are suffering, Americans don't want the government to meddle.
But federal law is far more strict and far less compassionate. Last June's Gonzales v. Raich Supreme Court decision ruled that the federal government can arrest medical marijuana patients even in states where it is legal. Some members of Congress have for years been advancing the Hinchey-Rohrbacher Amendment that would shield medical marijuana patients in those states from arrest. Last year it was defeated, 161-264, but support is increasing.
It is time for Congress to catch up with the common sense of the American people. Our federal government is supposed to be limited in its powers. It shouldn't set aside state laws and throw sick people in jail for using politically incorrect treatment. Click here to urge Congress to pass the Hinchey-Rohrbacher Amendment, and H.R. 2087, the States' Rights to Medical Marijuana Act.
