A private initiative...

New business offers services to employers, concerned parents
TORONTO - A Canadian couple has launched a business offering worried parents or concerned employers private drug-detection services that will search homes and offices for everything from marijuana to heroin.
Russ Rathy of Pense, Saskatchewan, started the home-based business, Crusader Resources, along with his wife, after buying a young German shepherd trained to sniff out drugs.
The dog, named Alis Vicona, cost $16,000 and can detect drugs or the residue of drugs in buildings or on clothing, even after 30 days.
So far, the couple has had clients that range from concerned parents to curious employers.
"If you suspect your kids of drug use, this is one way to make sure there's no drugs in the house," Russ Rathy, 39, told Reuters from his home near the western province's capital of Regina.
"Obviously it gives you a little more leeway rather than waiting for them to become an addict and put them in rehabilitation — or being picked up by the police and now they have a criminal record and their future is pretty much shot with that."
Once the dog detects drugs, Rathy said it is up to the client to decide what the consequences should be.
"Whether they contact police or flush it down the toilet, it's left up to them," he said. "We'll obviously make recommendations to call authorities."
Rathy, who says they started the business more out of parental concerns than a bid to make money, charges only C$20 ($16) for the search of a private home or vehicle.
For businesses it costs a bit more, depending on the frequency of searches and the length of the contract.
He uses a portion of the business income to fund free drug awareness presentations at schools and non-profit organizations.

I thought it was a great idea!
re:parents: you should not allow your children to use any mind altering substances before they have mature body and mind. Just as a parent would try to prevent thier child from smoking or drinking under age whats wrong with them finding thier 15 year olds stash? its thier house, thier property at risk, and it is thier minor child they are trying to raise as they see fit.
re:busniess: why the fuck you would want someone in your workplace that can't go through a whole shift without using is beyond me, but ok, they are adults, and most adults asume they do not have privacy at work, since legaly they don't. But come on, leave that shit at home, you can't drink at work so why bring a bottle of scotch into the office or busniess?leave it all at home where recreational substances belong. _________________ Reverend Cave Grower |

While I agree that its a good idea to be able to keep young kids away from drugs... This dose tear apart any trust relationship a family might have. Seems like military or prison level tactics instead of parenting. But thats not my main concern. People have a right to do as they will in their own homes. But I sure couldnt live like that.
The business thing is troubling. You seem to assume that somebody found out at work will be blazing up on the job, and that doesnt have to be the case. These dogs will smell the residue(smoke) from past use as well as recent. Do you think its ok to be persecuted on the job for a smoked the day before? I sure dont.
And frankly anyone wanting to use police dog tactics on me, even if i never use cannabis, is way over the line of my civil rights. Police state tactics like these dont belong in society. The fact that you can so easily defend them shows that some of us are already so used to giving up our rights that we have forgotten what freedom is.
How sad...

Dude, you just gave a justification for the police state we're living in!

Well...these forums are never boring.
Note: If you need drug-sniffing dogs to keep track of what your kids are doing, you are, frankly, not worth a shit as a parent...and nazi police dogs are not going to address the larger picture of what's wrong with YOU.
My opinion. Your mileage may vary.
Bliss,

yes the dogs can smell residue, but evan if the dog hit on your coat your not going to have any problems as long as you didnt bring your crack and pipe to work with you. your right to privacy ends when you take it on to someone elses property, want privacy? keep that shit at home (or church)
re parenting: yea, you would have to be a pretty shitty parent to let your kid smoke pot or use drugs. Adicts come in all age/sex/race combinations, and they will lie and decive anyone to keep gettting high, evan mom and dad. so because a child got hooked on meth the parent is bad? but wouldn't you be a worse parent if you did nothing when you became concerned about your childs health? You can't talk to an adict that doesn't admit having an adiction like a normal person, all you can do as a parent is love them support them, and do everthing you can to seperate them from thier drug long enough for them to get a grip on reality.
police state? no this is not the police or can't you read? this is a private comapany that does not evan call the police when they find somthing, its a private FYI service, not a governemnt agency running dogs all over town and in private homes without warrants. Thier clients are private companys and parents seeking information.
besides its in CANADA. lol _________________ Reverend Cave Grower |
