Amen to that! It was a renaissance in every sense-- art, music, film, literature, social consciousness.
Those who put it down or focus only on certain sensational aspects of it simply do not know what they are talking about.

Things that changed my life when I was a teen in the late sixties. LSD, cannabis, books, music, films.
Off the top of my head, some examples:
Book: One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest by Kesey( great man who acted BIG). Anything by Hermann Hesse. The Woman's Room by Marilyn French. The Magus by John Fowles. DH. Lawrence was about 50 years ahead of his time. A brave pioneer.
Monty Python. Yes, they mocked and subverted, exposing the insanity of the institutions. The secret was not to take the lie seriously anymore but get free of it.
Album: I Feel like I'm Fixin to Die by Country Joe and the Fish(truly psychedelic in sentiment) and Electic Music for the Mind and Body. All the San Francisco bands.
Films: Blow up. Zabriskie Point, Easy Rider,Little Big Man and so on. All about outsiders.
and of course many many more. Feel free to name your own inspirations!
Somewhere between now and then ,there's been a cruel reaction and regression--- since Reagan/Thatcher. A return to the great dumbing down of self-interest and narcissism. A diminishing of the self to a branded consumer.
Like Kesey said--do what you can to be as big as you want to be. It seems to me the present zeitgeist is making people smaller. _________________ don't pull no punches but don't push the river |

I'd simply say "ditto" ... and add CATCHER IN THE RYE by J.D. Salinger -- and SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE and BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS by Vonnegut...
...and I shan't forget STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND by Heinlein.
Bliss,
Ben
P.S.
Oh!...and CATCH-22 by Joseph Heller --- and Robert Altman's movie, M*A*S*H*
I'm sure there's lots more...but I'm plumb tucker'd out and goin' to bed. _________________ "We are the Ones we have been waiting for."

yes, they did not lose. because irregardless of the titles and names they wear, those so-called "nazi's" are the invisibles who were simply testing the waters for their plans of world domination through reincarnation within family lineages. _________________ "Penalties against the possession of a drug

| There will be another "60s," there has to be. |
That period was such a huge paradigm shift and change in consciousness that it's hard to imagine another on its way. Our times are characterised by cynicism and fatalism. A kind of post modern resignation. There was a longing for something back then, an idealism.
What will it take to awaken a new spirit of hope and optimism which isn't going to be co-opted by commercial interests and sold back as another fashion trend? I reckon an uncompromising and all -out resistance to the media and the entertainment industry is a good start. And a complete boycott of all competitive sport. Whatever distracts and tranquilises us into fixating on the trivial.
'Brave new world' was another good '60s' book although written before. _________________ don't pull no punches but don't push the river |

All of that began with the proper, educated use of psychedelics. Once the populace began to wake up, the government stopped its experiments on unwitting citizens and terminated all studies. When they discovered that it was too late because minds had been opened and people believed in a better future without commercialism, they used mass media to reprogram these open minds with capitalist propaganda.
Having a free mind is not a nostalgic memory. A free mind is our right. We have a right to believe in a better future. That is what the 60's taught us. _________________ "Penalties against the possession of a drug

So would I! There are an increasing number of people becoming dissillusioned with what today's society is trying to offer. As capitalism becomes increasingly aggressive, so will people's backlash to it.
The resistance to it is growing slowly, but it is growing. _________________ Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits.

Yep--psychedelics were/are at the heart of it. The right to explore your own consciousness. They can't get you there so they try and control the border by suppressing the vehicle.
After the 60s I tried various spiritual disciplines( mainly Buddhist and Hindu practices and philosophy)) and there's always some whacko ruling the roost of lost and desperate souls looking for guidance. What I mean is someone influencing your consciousness with their agenda.
With psychedelics you're released from other people's programmes of obedience and submission to authority. And yes, that threatens the control freaks in every sphere(political, spiritual) who want to keep your mind within strict parameters.
It's worth checking out any film of Hitler speaking. Very educational. His speeches were the purest and clearest and most honest expression of the philosophy of obedience and submission to the will of a higher force or authority. A complete sacrifice of individuality and freedom. He actually belted this out again and again...give up your self, submit and obey.
This same madness is manifest today in different contexts but disguised in seemingly benign forms. But it always comes down to respect for authority of some kind.
History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake.
