Courier Molested and Sacrament Desecrated By Missouri State Police
The Morning of February 13th, 2005 while Missouri State Police were likely doing routine marijuana courier profiling, approximately 50 miles west of St. Louis, they stopped and questioned Ordained Cogniscenti Joseph Allen Butts while he was performing his Official Church function as a Certified Courier for the Church Of Cognizance.
When asked if he was transporting any drugs or other illegal items he responded NO. The Officer then did the routine "you don't mind if I search then do you?" to which O.C. Butts responded yes he did.
As a Certified Courier of the Church Of Cognizance he could not in good faith violate his duties to the Church by allowing a non-member to desecrate Consecrated Sacrament, or other Sacred articles in route between member Monasteries and/or Licensed Wellness Centers of the Church.
When O.C. Butts showed the Officer his Certification, the Officer informed O.C. Butts that he would be detained while a K-9 unit was brought to the scene. When the K-9 unit arrived the Officer on the scene took the dog around the vehicle several times without response.
The Officer then commented that the wind was blowing away any scent, and started smacking the tire and body of the vehicle with his hand until he declared the dog had pointed, and that was enough for them to search the Courier's vehicle.
Details are sketchy as to what happened next. A search must have occurred because O.C. Butts was placed on a 24-hour investigative hold at Franklin County Jail while Officers awaited a "Warrant for Arrest for attempting to traffic in excess of 100 kilos of Marijuana through the State of Missouri".
A half hour after their time was up, on the hold, an Arrest Warrant was issued with a "cash only" Bond set at $100,000.00.
As far as the Church knows there was no warrant issued to Search the vehicle, or the Sealed containers within the Sanctuary of the Locked Trunk of O.C. Butts's vehicle.
I myself, E.C. Danuel Quaintance, an Enlightened Cogniscenti and the Representative Head for the Church Of Cognizance, am appalled that Officers of this State showed such blatant disregard toward the religion of others. This is nothing less than molesting an Officer of our Church, and Desecration of our Sacrament with no justification. This is a prime example of a Hate Crime directed against our victimless mode of worship. The Government has no compelling interest to be molesting members of our Religion, and then to hold this Certified Courier without allowing him as of yet to place any phone calls is outrageous, no matter what the excuse. Our members are truly concerned, as should all other religious groups be. After all, remember, first they come for the others!"
The Church is considering suing the Officer as an Individual, and the State, for negligent disregard of O.C. Butts's human rights, along with issues of over entanglement of government in religious affairs while attempting to enforce a prohibition upon the Churches prime deity.
The Church Of Cognizance is a Neo-Zoroastrian religion founded in 1991. Their mantra is "good thoughts, good words, good deeds". They believe marijuana is "the Teacher" that opens their eyes, "the Provider" of all things essential to life, and "the Protector" of their health and longevity.
They further claim recent archeological, and now modern science both support their ancient yet simple views about their religion, and the sacred text of the Avesta that they study.

Attorney Carolyn Mathews, whom had just helped another COC member with dismissal of charges of possessing the Churches Sacrament, attended the arraignment hearing and filed motions for a bail reduction, and to preserve the evidence.
Bail was reduced to $50,000.00, but as the motion pointed out neither the Church nor O.C. Butts have sufficient funds required to even cover the $50,000.00 in this case.
