In the latest of a string of Regietheater shock tactic attempts to stir European opera houses, Berlin's Neuköllner Opera has reportedly staged a production of Saint-Saëns' one-act operetta The Yellow Princess in which company performers smoke cannabis  s onstage, Ananova.com has reported.
Additionally, Neuköllner Opera is encouraging audience members to smoke their own marijuana during Saint-Saens' operetta about a young Dutchman who, under the influence of narcotics, imagines himself falling in love in Japan.
The company is reportedly claiming "artistic license" in order to protect themselves from drug laws.
Bernhard Glocksin, 46, the company's artistic director said that an evening at the opera would be "improved with a few s and some appetizing lines," adding, "It's a test to see just what we can get away with."
