This is from a comment from someone named mutatron on the website Digg and I found it quite an important thing to know, and at the same time wondered why an organisation like NORML, which is populated with lawyers, have not organised a campaign to delete "marihuana" and THC from the CSA schedule.
Here's the comment I found on Digg...

Cannabis could be legalized in two strokes of a pen. According to the Wikipedia article, proceedings to delete "marihuana" and THC from the CSA schedule can be initiated by *any interested party*.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controlled_Substances_Act_of_1970
Proceedings to add, delete, or change the schedule of a drug or other substance may be initiated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), or by petition from any interested party, including the manufacturer of a drug, a medical society or association, a pharmacy association, a public interest group concerned with drug abuse, a state or local government agency, or an individual citizen. When a petition is received by the DEA, the agency begins its own investigation of the drug. |

NORML did try to take cannabis off of schedule I but failed. This was the case where the DEA's own administrative law judge wrote ,"Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man."

Everytime it is studied the conclusion is the same. Cannabis is improperly classified and should be decriminalized. _________________ We will succeed unless we quit. |

That leaves me with two questions, for one, why did they fail, and second, why not try again?
For all I know it is relatively simple to prove that it isn't such a harmful substance, certainly not compared to coffee and lots of other legal 'drugs' and it is also quite simple to prove the medicinal benefits. _________________ █ Please read the Board Rules and Posting, and you

The answer is simple. MONEY. Cannabis prohibition is the lynch pin of the drug war . You change its status and the whole thing falls apart for thr prohibitionist. And a lot of bueraucrats lose thier jobs.
Barry McCafferty and John Walters have both stated publicly that pro legilisers are not entitled to their facts. And so it goes. _________________ "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace."

| Like sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting, la la la, drugs are bad, drugs are bad. Just to keep their face, they're scared of the dam breaking and the flood gate opening. If they are proved wrong on one thing they could be wrong on others and then pop goes the pharmaceutical companies, at present they have the monopoly on the publics health. |
