Worldwide protests demand end of Iraq war
9/25/2005 6:45:00 AM GMT

Thousands of anti war activists marched through London on Saturday demanding the immediate withdrawal of British troops from Iraq, as similar protests were planned to be held in several other European countries including France, Italy, and Spain.

Also in Washington thousands of protesters marched Saturday to demand the end of the illegal U.S. occupation in Iraq. Organisers expect 100,000 to participate in Saturday rally, march and concert near the White House and Washington Monument.

According to Andrew Burgin of the Stop the War Coalition, which organised London rally along with the Muslim Association of Britain, there were 100,000 demonstrators in Hyde Park, in the city center.

“We will not be ignored “
“It is now time, once again, for the British people to step forward into the streets and insist that this time we will not be ignored,” said one of the organizers.

London demonstrators carried posters reading “Bush World No. 1 Terrorist,” reported Sky News.

More protests were planned in Copenhagen and Helsinki, according to Agence France-Presse.

Families of soldiers killed in Iraq also participated in the protests.

Sue Smith of Tamworth, northwest England, father of Phillip Hewett a British soldier who died in July in a roadside bomb attack near Basra, read out a letter addressing the British Prime Minister Tony Blair; urging him to pull troops out of Iraq, the BBC reported.

Numerous polls conducted in recent weeks showed that Public support for the war has dwindled in the U.S. and the U.K.

In Britain, two-third of respondents in a July 15-17 poll by ICM Ltd. for the Guardian newspaper linked July 7 attacks on London to Blair's decision to join the U.S. in the invasion.

“War in Iraq is going badly”
Also Opinion polls show that a great portion of the American public believe the war in Iraq is going badly and U.S. troops should be brought home.

More anti-war rallies were being held in other cities across the United States.

Demonstrators came from from far and wide to join the largest rally in Washington since the war began in March 2003.

Demonstrators carried banners reading "Bring the Troops Home Now" and "Bush Lied, Thousands Died."

"We have to get involved," said Erika McCroskey, 27, who travelled from Des Moines in Iowa to take part in the demonstration.

Also Paul Rutherford, a 60-year old Republican, who still supports President Bush, except over the war, said:

"President Bush needs to admit he made a mistake in the war and bring the troops home, and let's move on," he said.

“Cindy”
Among those who participated in the rally was Cindy Sheehan, the mother of an American soldier who died in Iraq whose protest outside President Bush's Texas ranch during the summer grabbed the attention of the world's news agencies as well as a huge number of anti-war supporters all over the world.

Together with a group of mothers against the war, Cindy held a small rally near the Washington monument on Friday.

“Be patient”
In his radio address last month, President Bush appealed to American public to be patient.

"Our efforts in Iraq and the broader Middle East will require more time, more sacrifice and continued resolve," he said.

Addendum:

Just heard on Air America News that today, Sunday, there was a pro-war rally held in D.C.

Attendance: 400.

300,000 for peace.
400 for war.

300,000 take the time, trouble and expense to travel from all over the country to protest the war.

Pro-War folks could only muster 400. ...and the war mongers OWN the media!!!!

Sad, but the 400 got the publicity and the 300,000 prolly got no mention....

Many demonstrators focused their ire at Cindy Sheehan, the California woman whose protest near President Bush's Texas home last summer galvanized the anti-war movement.

Sheehan was among the speakers at Saturday's rally near the Washington Monument on the western part of the mall, an event that attracted an estimated 100,000 people. (Full story)

CNN (sin) only gives a count of 100,000....pff! Twisted Evil http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/09/25/war.rally.ap/index.html[url]
