These forums are mostly an online sanctuary brother rainbowbeamer and that's why those parts are 'for members only'. The sections of the forums that are public contain general news and information while those forums with topics which contain more personal information and experiences are the 'members only' sections.

About the searchboxes for members, I'm afraid that's how it is designed by the designers of the forum software and I'm not sure if I can change quieries into the members db without security issues, there have been quite a lot of those in the past.
