Drug law-reform activists face trial
Jury trial in Northern Territory Supreme Court starts October 10
Four members of the Darwin-based drug law reform group, the Network Against Prohibition (NAP), will represent themselves in a trial in the Northern Territory Supreme Court which starts tomorrow.
Nicolette Burrows, Ema Corro, Robert Inder-Smith and Gary Meyerhoff face the charge of 'business invasion' after they peacefully occupied the electorate office of NT Chief Minister Clare Martin on August 1, 2002.
The defendants were among a group of NAP members and supporters who were demonstrating against the 'drug house' laws, which came into force on that day.
If they are found guilty, they face up to seven years imprisonment.
The NAP members were the first people to be charged with the 'business invasion' offence, introduced by the Martin Government after the repeal of the Territory's mandatory sentencing laws for property offences.
Ms Corro was incarcerated on Friday for her involvement in other peaceful NAP demonstrations.
NAP spokesperson Gary Meyerhoff said: "This ongoing harassment and intimidation facilitated by the NT Labor Government is starting to take a toll on our members and supporters.
"Over the past three years, NAP members have been charged with more than 100 offences by the NT Police.
"They have been threatened by police, attacked and assaulted by police at peaceful demonstrations and unlawfully arrested and imprisoned. One NAP member was even run off the road recently by a police 'divvie' van."
Late last year, three NAP members were arrested by 'mistake' and spent two days in maximum security in Berrimah jail.
Mr Meyerhoff said: "None of us are physically or mentally up to this trial."
The trial has been set down for one full week, followed by another NAP trial which is due to commence on October 17.

Ex-cop holds family in siege
By Paul Dyer
June 9, 2003
An armed former NT police officer held a family in their home during a four-hour siege yesterday.
Police were called to a house in Dulverton Court in the Darwin suburb of Karama about 3am.
The 38-year-old former police officer, who was visiting friends, was armed with a 40cm carving knife.
He was reported to have been in a highly agitated state and is believed to have been drinking.
A man and three children -- a pair of three-year-old boys and a 13-month-old girl -- were asleep in the house at the time.
The man's wife called police twice. She then left the house on the advice of police.
She had alerted them that the man was threatening self-harm.
Acting Superintendent Del Jones said about 15 officers attended the scene, including police negotiators and members of the Territory Response Group.
"There were a number of threats made,'' she said.
"We were concerned for both him and other people.''
Police cordoned off the area and tried to negotiate with the armed man. Supt Jones said the siege ended when the man tried to leave the house and escape police at 7am.
TRG members gave chase and apprehended him immediately.
"He came out of the back of the house and he was trying to get across into a yard when the TRG people got him,'' he said.
Supt Jones said the man had left the NT police force "a couple of years ago''.
She said the man had been admitted to hospital for medical assessment under the Mental Health Act.
There were no plans to lay criminal charges at this stage.
No one was hurt and the occupants of the house are believed to have slept throughout the ordeal.

This was at the bottom of that article. Why isn't the cop being charged for breaking the law when his offense is far more dangerous in nature? _________________ -Brother Adam (we are all one family)

Police officers acquitted for beating a 64 yr old man recently in New Orleans. In the words of their defense attorney "all he had to do was comply"....and they wouldn't have fractured his face. |
