Alaska Recriminalizes Marijuana Possession
ANNE SUTTON
Associated Press
Three years after this state's top court legalized the use of small amounts of marijuana, Gov. Frank Murkowski signed a bill recriminalizing the drug.
The law - signed Friday - will be challenged in court, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska, leading to a likely judicial review of the state's marijuana laws.
Another provision of the bill, which is not in dispute, would make it tougher to buy ingredients used in making methamphetamine.
In a press release, Murkowski said the state's current marijuana laws send the wrong message to Alaska's youth.
While the Supreme Court court ruled three decades ago that the right to privacy was far more important than any harm that could result from use of the drug, Murkowski says marijuana is a far more potent and dangerous drug now than it was in the 1970s.
Under the new law, pot possession of 4 ounces (113 grams) or more is a felony. Possession of less than 4 ounces (113 grams) but more than an ounce (28 grams) is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail. Less than one ounce (28 ounces) is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail.

That's quite a step in the wrong direction.
<sarcasm> I heard you can buy this incredibly strong stuff called liquor. Its something like the beer people drank in the 70s but now its so much more potent that its a completely different drug. It'll probably be illegal soon <sarcasm/>
The County Sheriff told my senior class that "Marijuana is a different drug than it was in the 70s. In fact its 10 times as potent today.". It doesn't take long to think about how much cannabis you'd be smoking to feel any effect if this were even half true. I can't say I've ever heard of anyone in the 70s offering to "smoke 10 s with ya, man". Even if it were true, its common sense that the greater the potency the less substance required, thus meaning that it would be even 10 times safer than it was in the 70s. Great news.
Comparing improperly stored fan leaves to professionally grown, manicured, and cured connesseuir bud shows potency differences no matter what the year is.
Perhaps someone needs to tell these people that Cheech and Chong movies do not qualify as research material..."Ok, that looks bigger than the one I confiscated last night, so it must be stronger now" _________________ The free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and

This is indeed a very sad thing. I had a feeling that this was going to happen when I read some of the governor of Alaska's rhetoric a few weeks ago. He seems a rather conservative sort with a keen eye on catching some big media attention nationally, no doubt with some intention of furthering his political aims in the future. However, there was some hope in the article that I read, in that, when the reporters were talking to the people on the street, no one at the grassroots level was all too keen on the idea of this bill. It rather contradicts the traditional Alaskan paradigm of the rugged individual, and privacy rights being paramount in contrast to the will of elected officials. In consequence, we can hope that the reps who voted for this bill, will soon find themselves voted out of office.
