- After police spotted a small cannabis plant growing on the balcony of a house in a sleepy island village, the 75-year-old Greek woman who lives there was charged with drug offenses, authorities said.
Hariklia Griva - a widowed mother of four from Ayiassos, on the eastern Aegean Sea island of Lesvos - was arrested Wednesday and charged with growing cannabis with the intent of trafficking in the drug. She was released on bail of $2,480.
Griva - a retiree whose late husband was a policeman - said the 16-inch potted plant sprung from a seed dropped by her pet canaries, who live in a cage on the balcony overlooking a busy Ayiassos street - opposite the local police station.
"I couldn't believe it, when they told me I was being arrested," Griva said. "The plant must have grown from the bird seed. I had no idea what the plant was. I watered it regularly. I thought it looked quite nice."

THose sneaky, filthy, rotten, dirty pigs have gone too far this time taking grandma into custody with her arms handcuffed behind her back and slamming her frail head against a police car just because her little Tweety has a jones for eating cannabis seeds! (Ok, I don't exactly believe the Tweedy/seed story, but maybe we can make her an honorary minister to help save her from the facist pigs.)
I guess Italy's economy must be doing well if they can throw away money to arrest grandma over one (1) fricking 16 inche plant.
